  • Seasonal Interest: The feathery seed heads appear in late summer, transitioning from a pale blue-green to a silvery, smoky hue that persists through the winter.
  • Zones: Thrives in USDA hardiness zones 3-9.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun for optimal growth but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Soil: Well-draining soil is a must for these grasses. They can adapt to various soil types but thrive in loamy, sandy soils.
  • Watering: Once established, Holy Smoke Bluestem is relatively drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Water deeply during dry spells, and let the soil dry out between waterings.
  • Care: Low-maintenance and deer-resistant, this grass is a breeze to care for. Trim back in late winter or early spring to promote new growth and maintain its shape.

Growing Zones: Holy Smoke Bluestem Grass is well-suited for USDA hardiness zones 3-9, making it a versatile choice for gardeners across a broad geographic range. Whether you're in the northern climates or the southern regions, Holy Smoke will grace your landscape with its captivating presence.

Care Tips:

  1. Planting: Select a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil. Dig a hole that's as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the grass in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly.

  2. Watering: Initially, provide consistent moisture until the grass is established. Afterward, Holy Smoke is drought-tolerant and only requires occasional watering during extended dry spells.

  3. Pruning: In late winter or early spring, trim back the grass to 4-6 inches above the ground to promote new growth and maintain its shape.

  4. Fertilization: Holy Smoke typically doesn't require much fertilization. However, you can provide a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring if your soil lacks nutrients.

  5. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the grass to help retain soil moisture and deter weed growth.
